The Walden Woods Project is a non-profit
organization that preserves the land, literature, and
legacy of the famed Concord author and naturalist,
Henry David Thoreau. The organization protects
numerous sites in the 2,680-acre Walden Woods
-- the inspiration for many of Thoreau’s writings.
The public is invited to walk the one-mile, self-
guided interpretive path at Brister’s Hill celebrating
the environmental and social significance of this
site. Thoreau’s words (and the words of those he
influenced) are incised in granite to interpret the
landscape and illustrate the powerful insights
Thoreau contributed. The trail starts on Walden
Street, near Route 2. Park at the Walden Pond
State Reservation or in the visitor parking places at
Hapgood Wright Town Forest on Walden Street.
The Project owns and manages the Thoreau
Institute at 44 Baker Farm Road in nearby Lincoln,
MA. The Institute houses the most comprehensive
body of Thoreau-related material.
Exhibit space in the library displays historical
manuscripts, papers, and artifacts related to
Thoreau. The Institute is open to the public from
10 am - 4 pm on most weekdays (closed weekends).
